Team captains volunteer or get volunteered. Teams are formed from
LHTG members that sign up. Your team plays a different team each
Wednesday afternoon. Matches consisting of a Women’s Dbls., a Men’s
Dbls. and a mixed Dbls. The scores for each week are recorded and
the team with the most points at the end of the season wins bragging
rights. Look for signup information to be emailed and posted at the
Pavilion soon. It is a lot for fun and you get to meet a lot of new
people. Signup early.
The Men’s Doubles and the Oktoberfest
Tournaments will be scheduled after June 1st when we can
schedule the pavilion.
The Nighthawks (Monday and Wednesday
evening tennis group) held their third annual luncheon at Old Town
Pizza earlier this month. The attendees took this occasion to
acknowledge the contribution of Jack Hendricks for his diligence in
coordinating the Nighthawks players and matches for the past 7
years. Well over 30 LHTG members participate as regulars or subs in
Jack’s Nighthawks group.
Security at the courts remains a problem.
I see a new hole burned into the windscreen on courts 8 and 9. I
suspect this vandalism is done at night when no tennis players are
not around. Please make sure you lock the gates when leaving the
courts unless other SCLH players are waiting for the courts. I have
had complaints about not being able to read the numbers on the
combination locks making them difficult to open. I know Chris
O’Keefe has unsuccessfully researched lock manufactures trying to
find locks with larger numbers that will stand up under our
conditions. I have contacted a locksmith that thought he could find
such a lock but he has not called back. If any member has
information where we can get locks for our gates that would be
better than what we have please let me know and I will past it on to
Chris O’Keefe.
Chris O’Keefe and his crew lowered all of
the court roller holders at our suggestion. This makes it much
easier to get the rollers in and out. We all need to learn how to
store the rollers in the holders so they last longer and do not get
flat spots on the sponge rollers. The rollers need to be supported
on the metal braces not on the round rollers. Let us show Chris and
ourselves that we can do our part to extend the live of the rollers.
The Lincoln Hills HS tennis
coach asked if LHTG could possible help out their team by furnishing
them with used tennis ball? I thought this was a reasonable request
as I see so many tennis ball left on the courts or thrown into the
trashcans on or outside the courts. I since found out that the used
balls in the container at the pavilion are used in the ball machine.
If we made an effort to remind ourselves to carry our used tennis
balls up and put them in the contained at the pavilion we would have
plenty of used balls for the ball machine and also be able to donate
to the Lincoln High School Team. I have heard that we have had some
strained relations in the past with LHS tennis that I would like to
resolve so we can feel supportive of all worthy community
activities.
From time to time we get
requests to announce or promote activities or inform our membership
of injured or deceased members. Most of these requests are
worthwhile and many of them would be of interest to some of our
members but we would be criticized because we included some but not
others. I hope you all understand this decision and if you don’t,
run for president of LHTG next year and it will come clearer.
